When you start pedaling, the motor recognizes the movement and provides assistance after one crankshaft revolution. The assistance remains constant as long as you continue pedaling at the same assistance setting. In fact, with this form of assistance, it doesn't matter how hard you pedal. The assistance always remains the same.
